Project Overview
Flooring Solutions Ltd was appointed to carry out a specification-led commercial flooring installation at a theatre in Northwich, covering the venue’s circulation areas and winding staircases.
Theatres present a unique set of flooring challenges, combining high footfall from audiences arriving and departing in short, intense bursts with the need for an appearance that reflects the quality and atmosphere of the venue itself. Winding staircases add a further layer of complexity, requiring precise substrate preparation and careful attention to every curved tread and landing. The Challenge: Curved Staircases & High-Footfall Public Circulation Space
Circulation areas and staircases in a working theatre must cope with sudden surges of footfall before performances, during intervals, and at the end of each show, often with audiences moving quickly and in large numbers. The winding staircases at this venue added particular complexity, as each curved tread required individually accurate substrate preparation and careful setting out to achieve a consistent, safe finish throughout. The specification needed to deliver durability and slip resistance without compromising on the aesthetic quality expected in a public entertainment venue, all while the works were coordinated around the theatre’s performance schedule.
Products & Materials Used
Gradus Lafite Connect Space — LCSPACE30
The floor covering specified for this project was Gradus Lafite Connect Space carpet tile, reference LCSPACE30. Connect Space is a hardwearing, contract-grade carpet tile designed for demanding commercial and public sector environments, offering excellent durability and long-term appearance retention in areas of sustained heavy traffic such as theatre circulation spaces and staircases.
The Connect Space range delivers a refined, contemporary look well suited to a public performance venue, helping to create a welcoming and considered impression for audiences as they move through the building. As a Gradus product, it also benefits from being part of a coordinated flooring and edge protection system, ensuring visual and performance consistency across the flat and staircase areas alike.
F. Ball F41 Adhesive
F. Ball F41 was used to bond the Gradus Lafite Connect Space carpet tiles throughout the installation. F41 is a pressure-sensitive, releasable tackifier adhesive widely regarded as the industry standard for carpet tile installations in commercial environments. It provides a secure, reliable bond capable of withstanding the sudden, concentrated footfall typical of a theatre environment, while allowing individual tiles to be lifted and replaced without damage should localised repairs be needed in the future.
Ardex NA Screed
Thorough substrate preparation was essential to the success of this project, particularly given the winding staircase construction. Ardex NA screed was used to rebuild, reprofile, and level the treads and landings, providing an accurate, stable base for the carpet tile installation that followed. This careful screeding work ensured each curved step was brought to a consistent profile, critical to both the safety and the finished appearance of the staircases.
Gradus G Range Nosings
All staircase treads were completed with Gradus G Range stair nosings, providing a safe, durable, and regulation-compliant edge detail to every step, including the curved treads of the winding staircases. Gradus is the UK’s leading manufacturer of stair nosing and edge protection systems, and the G Range is one of their most widely specified profiles across commercial and public sector environments. The nosings provide a clearly defined, slip-resistant edge to each tread, reducing the risk of trips and falls while delivering a neat, professional finish that complements the Gradus Lafite Connect Space floor covering throughout.
