Primary Matting Manchester
Primary Matting
Primary matting fitting is a crucial element in creating a clean, safe, and welcoming entrance for commercial spaces. These specialized services involve the installation of high-quality primary mats at the entrances of buildings, offering an effective barrier against dirt, moisture, and debris. The primary purpose of these mats is to prevent the transfer of outdoor elements into the interior, thereby preserving the cleanliness of the indoor environment. Professional fitting services for primary matting include precise measurement, customization, and strategic placement to maximize their efficiency. These mats are designed to trap and retain dirt, preventing it from being tracked further into the building. In addition to their functional benefits, primary mats also contribute to safety by reducing the risk of slips and falls. Businesses can choose from a variety of materials and designs to complement their interior aesthetics and branding. Investing in primary matting fitting services not only protects the longevity of interior flooring but also creates a positive first impression for visitors by showcasing a commitment to cleanliness and safety from the moment they enter the premises.
How Primary Matting Works
Primary matting is the first line of defence at a building entrance. It sits directly inside or at the threshold of the doorway, usually recessed into a matwell, and is designed to scrape off coarse dirt, grit and water before they are walked into the building. It works best as part of an entrance zone, followed by secondary matting that dries footwear and removes finer dirt. A properly specified entrance system protects the floor finishes beyond it, reduces cleaning costs and helps cut the risk of slips from wet footwear.
Primary Matting Options
- Aluminium and rubber scraper systems — hard-wearing profiles for high-footfall entrances
- Aluminium systems with textile or brush inserts — combine scraping and moisture removal
- Bespoke sizes and shapes — made to suit your matwell, door layout and footfall
We will recommend the right system based on how busy the entrance is, whether it is exposed to weather, and what flooring lies beyond it.
Where We Install Primary Matting
We fit primary matting across Manchester and Greater Manchester in schools and colleges, offices, retail units, healthcare buildings, leisure centres and public buildings — anywhere an entrance takes heavy daily footfall.
Our Installation Process
We start with a free site survey to measure the matwell or entrance area and check the frame and subfloor. Where there is no matwell, we can advise on surface-laid options with suitable ramped edges. Matting is then manufactured to size and fitted with minimal disruption, and we can work out of hours so your entrance stays open during the working day.
Cost and Timescales
The cost of primary matting depends on the size of the entrance, the system chosen and whether the matwell or frame needs work. Bespoke matting is made to measure, so lead times vary by product. We confirm price and programme in a fixed quotation after the survey.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between primary and secondary matting?
Primary matting scrapes off heavy dirt and water at the door. Secondary matting follows it inside to dry footwear and capture finer dirt. Used together, they stop far more dirt reaching your floors.
Can you replace the inserts in an existing matwell?
Often, yes. We can measure your existing matwell and supply replacement matting to fit, or recommend a new frame if the old one is damaged.
Does entrance matting reduce slip risk?
Removing water and grit from footwear at the entrance helps reduce the risk of slips on the floors beyond it, particularly in wet weather.
Do you work outside business hours?
Yes. We can schedule entrance matting installation in the evening, at weekends or during school holidays to keep your entrance open.
