The Brief
The existing sheet carpet across the central staircases had reached the end of its serviceable life and no longer met the safety and maintenance standards expected in a professional office setting. Preparation & Substrate Works
Following the removal of the existing carpet, all staircase surfaces were assessed and prepared to the required standard. Ardex screeds were applied to the shuttered steps to ensure a smooth, level and structurally sound substrate prior to installation. Correct preparation at this stage is essential in staircase refurbishments — particularly where a change of flooring type is involved — as the substrate must be entirely free from irregularities to guarantee a lasting bond and a professional finish.
Flooring Specification
The specified product was Polyflor Polysafe Vogue Ultra PUR in Whirlpool 4805, a premium safety flooring solution from one of the UK’s leading commercial vinyl manufacturers. Polysafe Vogue Ultra PUR incorporates permanently embedded aluminium oxide particles throughout its full depth, providing reliable, sustainable slip resistance that meets the demands of high-footfall staircase environments. Its PUR surface treatment also offers enhanced cleanability and long-term appearance retention — an important consideration in a client-facing professional premises.
Two adhesive systems were employed to ensure optimal performance across the installation. Uzin KE 2000s, a high-tack pressure-sensitive dispersion adhesive, was used in conjunction with F Ball F60, a highly flexible and water-resistant acrylic adhesive. This combination ensured a secure and durable bond across all staircase surfaces, accommodating the varying substrate conditions and the specific performance requirements of safety vinyl in a heavily used environment.
Stair Nosings
The installation was completed with Gradus XT stair nosings fitted to each step. The Gradus XT is a robust aluminium nosing profile that provides a clearly defined, high-contrast edge to each tread, significantly improving visibility and reducing the risk of slips and trips. Durable, low-maintenance and professionally finished, the XT nosings complement the Polyflor Polysafe specification and ensure the staircase meets all relevant safety standards for a commercial setting.
