William Hulme Grammar School
Flooring Solutions Ltd was appointed to carry out a comprehensive commercial staircase flooring installation at William Hulme Grammar School, one of Manchester’s most prestigious independent schools. The project centred on the building’s central staircases — a demanding scope covering 9 flights across 3 floors, including a striking open-plan balcony area that required meticulous attention to both finish quality and safety standards.
The Brief
With high daily footfall from staff, students and visitors, the staircase and balcony areas demanded a flooring solution that could combine durability and slip resistance with a professional, high-quality aesthetic. As a working school environment, programme management and minimal disruption were also key priorities throughout the installation process.
Preparation & Substrate Works
Before any flooring could be installed, thorough substrate preparation was essential to ensure a long-lasting result. Ardex screeds were applied to the shuttered steps to create a level, stable and properly profiled surface across all nine flights. This preparatory stage is critical in staircase installations, where unevenness or weak substrates can lead to premature failure of both adhesives and floor coverings. The quality of this groundwork underpins the longevity of the entire installation.
Flooring Specification
The specified flooring product was Forbo Infused — Noir Flame 4502, a premium homogeneous vinyl that delivers outstanding performance in high-traffic commercial settings. Its through-body construction ensures consistent colour and wear characteristics throughout the life of the product, making it an ideal choice for a busy educational environment where resilience is paramount. The deep, sophisticated tone of Noir Flame 4502 also delivers a contemporary finish in keeping with the school’s impressive interior.
To ensure proper adhesion across all staircase surfaces, F Ball F41 Tackifier was applied prior to laying. The F41 is a pressure-sensitive adhesive that provides a reliable bond while allowing for controlled repositioning during installation — an important consideration when working on complex staircase geometry across multiple floors.
Stair Nosings
The installation was completed with Gradus XT stair nosings throughout. The Gradus XT profile is a market-leading aluminium nosing system, providing clear contrast and demarcation at each step edge to enhance visibility and significantly reduce the risk of trips and falls. Combining robust structural performance with a clean, refined appearance, the XT nosings meet the stringent safety requirements expected in a school environment while contributing to the overall quality of the finished result.
