Flooring Solutions Ltd was appointed to carry out a premium commercial carpet tile installation at Kings House Conference Centre, Manchester, covering the main multipurpose conference room — a total area of approximately 500.00 m².
Conference and events venues demand flooring that works hard on multiple levels. It must perform under the heavy, varied footfall of delegates, exhibitors, and event staff; withstand the repeated movement of furniture, staging, and equipment; and present an impeccable appearance that reflects the professional standards of the venue. Our team delivered a fully specification-led installation, incorporating a bespoke feature strip detail to both enhance the aesthetic of the space and provide a clear visual marker across the room’s internal ramp.
The Challenge: High-Specification Flooring for a Multipurpose Events Environment
Multipurpose conference rooms present a unique set of demands. The flooring must be durable enough to withstand intensive daily use across a wide variety of event formats — from large-scale conferences and exhibitions to private dining and awards ceremonies — while maintaining a high-end finish that is fitting for a prestigious Manchester venue. The presence of an internal ramp within the space introduced an additional requirement: a contrasting feature strip to clearly delineate the change in level and ensure the safety of delegates and visitors at all times.
Products & Materials Used
Forbo Tessera Twine — Ebony Entangle with Contrasting Feature Strip
The floor covering specified for this project was Forbo Tessera Twine carpet tile in the Ebony Entangle colourway, installed throughout the main conference room area. Tessera Twine is a high-performance, solution-dyed loop pile carpet tile engineered for the most demanding commercial environments, combining outstanding durability with a sophisticated, textural aesthetic. Its tight, structured construction resists crushing and pile distortion under heavy use, making it ideally suited to the intensive footfall and frequent furniture movement associated with a busy conference and events venue.
The Ebony Entangle colourway delivers a deep, refined finish that creates a strong, professional backdrop for any event format — from corporate conferences to evening functions. To complement the main floor covering and provide a clear visual indicator across the internal ramp, a contrasting feature strip of Forbo Tessera Twine in a lighter colourway was installed to mark the change in level. This detail serves both an aesthetic and a safety function, breaking up the floor plane with a considered design element while ensuring the ramp is clearly visible to all users of the space.
Ardex CL Plus
Prior to the carpet tile installation, the substrate was prepared using Ardex CL Plus, a high-performance calcium sulphate-based smoothing and levelling compound. Ardex CL Plus was applied across the conference room floor to address surface irregularities and achieve the consistently flat, smooth substrate required for a high-quality carpet tile installation. In a space of this scale and profile, thorough substrate preparation is essential — any unevenness in the base will telegraph through to the finished floor surface over time, compromising both the appearance and the longevity of the installation. Ardex CL Plus is widely regarded as the industry benchmark for large-area commercial levelling, and its use here ensured a uniformly excellent base across the full installation area.
Gradus XT Nosings & Landing Trims
The internal ramp was completed with Gradus XT stair nosings and landing trims, providing safe, durable, and regulation-compliant edge protection throughout. Gradus is the UK’s leading manufacturer of stair nosing and edge protection systems, and the XT profile is one of their most widely specified products in commercial and public sector environments. The ramp-back design eliminates abrupt edges at the transition between levels, significantly reducing the risk of trips and falls while delivering a clean, professional finish that integrates seamlessly with the contrasting feature strip detail of the carpet tile installation.
The Gradus landing trims provide a neat and robust edge detail at the head and foot of the ramp, protecting the vulnerable carpet tile edges from lifting or fraying under the heavy footfall and trolley movement typical of a busy conference venue. Together, the XT nosings and landing trims complete the installation to the highest standard of both safety and finish.
