Harper Green School – Main Building Circulation Areas Flooring Installation

    Project Overview

Flooring Solutions Ltd was appointed to carry out a comprehensive commercial safety flooring installation at Harper Green School, covering six corridors forming the main building circulation areas — a total area of approximately 400.00 m².

Secondary school corridors are among the most relentlessly used spaces in any commercial building. Between lessons, at breaks, and at the start and end of the school day, these circulation routes must handle an extraordinary volume of foot traffic while maintaining a safe, clean, and professional environment. Our team delivered a fully specification-led installation across all six corridors, using premium products throughout to ensure a result that performs reliably under the most demanding conditions.

The Challenge: Large-Scale Safety Flooring Across Six Busy School Corridors

At 400.00 m² across six separate corridor areas, this was a substantial and logistically demanding project. Each corridor required careful substrate assessment and preparation prior to installation, and the flooring specification needed to meet the stringent slip-resistance requirements expected in a busy secondary school environment. Coordinating works across multiple areas of an operational school building required close communication with the client and careful programming to ensure disruption to pupils and staff was kept to an absolute minimum throughout.

    Products & Materials Used

    Altro Walkway 20 (VM20) — Cherry

The safety flooring specified for this project was Altro Walkway 20 in the Cherry colourway (reference VM20). Altro Walkway 20 is one of the most trusted and widely installed safety flooring products in the UK, with a long-established reputation for delivering consistent, long-term slip resistance in education, healthcare, and public sector environments. It achieves the independently verified Low Slip Potential classification across its full product lifetime — not just when new — providing the school with a floor covering that can be relied upon to keep pupils and staff safe year after year.

The 2mm gauge construction offers excellent durability underfoot, resisting the scuffs, indentations, and surface wear that are inevitable in high-footfall corridor environments. The Cherry colourway provides a warm, vibrant finish that brings character and colour to the school’s main circulation areas, creating a welcoming environment while meeting the highest standards of safety performance.

    Ardex Screeds with P141 Primer

Comprehensive substrate preparation was carried out prior to the safety flooring installation using Ardex screeds, primed with Ardex P141 primer throughout. Ardex P141 is a fast-drying, solvent-free primer specifically designed to consolidate and seal porous or absorbent substrates ahead of the application of smoothing and levelling compounds. By conditioning the substrate prior to screeding, P141 ensures optimal adhesion and minimises the risk of delamination or surface failure over time — a critical consideration in high-traffic areas subject to constant heavy use.

Ardex screeds were then applied over the primed substrate to achieve the consistently flat, smooth, and structurally sound surface required for a high-quality safety flooring installation. Ardex products are widely regarded as the industry benchmark for commercial substrate preparation, and their use across all six corridors ensured a uniformly excellent base for the Altro Walkway 20 installation.

Uzin KE49HT — High Temperature Adhesive

Altro Walkway 20 was bonded throughout using Uzin KE49HT, a specialist high-temperature acrylic adhesive engineered for use in environments where elevated underfloor temperatures may be encountered, such as areas served by high-output underfloor heating systems. KE49HT provides a robust, long-lasting bond that remains stable and secure even under thermal stress, ensuring the safety flooring performs as intended across the full 400.00 m² installation area.

The specification of a high-temperature adhesive demonstrates the importance of matching every element of a flooring system to the specific conditions of the building. Using a standard adhesive in an environment with elevated substrate temperatures risks bond failure and floor lifting over time — the selection of Uzin KE49HT ensures the integrity of the installation is maintained for the long term.
