The Grange Senior School – Commercial Staircase & Corridor Flooring
Project Overview
Flooring Solutions Ltd was appointed to carry out a comprehensive commercial flooring installation at The Grange Senior School, covering 2 staircases and all communal corridors — a total area of approximately 600m².
School environments present some of the most demanding conditions for commercial flooring. With hundreds of pupils, staff, and visitors passing through corridors and staircases every day, durability, safety, and ease of maintenance are paramount. The Challenge: High-Traffic Flooring Across a Busy School Environment
Communal corridors and staircases in secondary schools are among the highest footfall areas in any commercial building. Flooring must withstand constant heavy use, resist scuffing and soiling, and maintain a professional appearance throughout the school day and beyond. At 600m², this was a substantial project requiring careful coordination to minimise disruption to the school’s day-to-day operations while delivering a high-quality finish across all areas.
Products & Materials Used
Forbo Eternal Wood — Elegant Oak (12802)
The floor covering specified for this project was Forbo Eternal Wood in the Elegant Oak colourway (reference 12802). Forbo Eternal Wood is a homogeneous vinyl flooring product engineered for the most demanding commercial environments, including education, healthcare, and public buildings. Its through-colour construction means the design runs through the full depth of the product, ensuring that even heavy wear does not compromise the appearance of the surface over time.
The Elegant Oak colourway provides a refined, contemporary wood-effect finish that enhances the look of corridors and circulation spaces, creating a welcoming environment for pupils and visitors alike. As a Forbo product, it also benefits from excellent sustainability credentials, an important consideration for many schools and local authority clients.
Ardex Screeds — Shuttered Steps
Each staircase step was prepared using Ardex screeds prior to the installation of the floor covering. Shuttered step preparation ensures a dimensionally accurate and structurally sound substrate, which is essential for achieving a consistent, long-lasting result on stair treads and risers. Ardex screeds are widely regarded as the industry standard for this type of preparatory work, providing the stable base required for a high-performance vinyl installation.
Uzin KE2000S & F Ball F60 Adhesives
Two specialist adhesives were used across this project to suit the different substrate and installation conditions encountered on site. Uzin KE2000S is a high-performance, pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive suitable for bonding homogeneous and heterogeneous vinyl floor coverings to a wide range of substrates. F Ball F60 is a robust, solvent-free acrylic adhesive from one of the UK’s most trusted flooring adhesive manufacturers, well suited to the demands of high-traffic commercial environments. Together, these products ensure a secure, lasting bond across the full 600m² installation area.
Gradus XT Ramp Back Nosings
All staircase steps were completed with Gradus XT Ramp Back stair nosings, providing a safe and professional edge detail to every tread. Gradus is the leading UK manufacturer of stair nosings and edge protection systems, and the XT Ramp Back profile is one of their most widely specified products in education and public sector environments. The ramp-back design eliminates abrupt edges, reducing the risk of trips and falls while delivering a neat, durable finish that complements the Forbo Eternal Wood floor covering. The nosings also assist in meeting UK building regulations and relevant slip-resistance standards for educational buildings.
